Exploring the Hudson Valley: Go Tubing on the Esopus
Go Tubing on the Esopus

This is something so fun—you’ve got to try to do it sometime before you graduate from Vassar. There’s a limited window of opportunity because the Town Tinker Tube Rental is only open from Memorial Day weekend through September 30th, and it’s so cold in September that you’ll probably want to rent a wetsuit. Of course, there’s the transportation issue—need a car or a friend with a car. But it’s not that far—an hour and 15 minutes according to Google Maps. So basically, you go to Phoenicia, NY, which is a funky little town in the Catskills, and you rent tubes, life jackets, and (if it’s cold) wetsuits, and then you take the tube taxi up river and then float down. Bring some crappy old sneakers (you can rent those, too, if you don’t own any), a towel, and a change of clothes. And afterwards, mosey on over to Sweet Sue’s on Main Street for the best pancakes you’ve ever tasted.
