Many of the locations listed in 101 Things To Do are in downtown Poughkeepsie or in towns and villages north or south of Poughkeepsie. If you have a car, or a friend who has a car, getting there is no problem. If you don’t have a car, here are some transportation alternatives:

Loop 6: On Saturdays, you can catch the Loop bus from in front of Main Gate at 11:46am and take it to downtown Potown where it will let you off at the intersection of Main and Market streets (15 minute ride). The last bus back to Vassar departs from Main and Market at 2:15. Not that much time, it’s true. But you could take a taxi back.

TAXI:

From Vassar to downtown Potown around the Civic Center costs $5 to $6 per person, each way.

Poughkeepsie is on the Hudson line of the Metro-North Railroad. After the morning rush hour, trains leave for NYC on the half hour (actually, 33 minutes after the hour) and arrive at Grand Central about an hour and 50 minutes later. A one-way ticket, off-peak, is $12.75.

You can take the train as far as Beacon (a 20-minute ride) for a bargain $2.75 each way—and go visit the famous DIA: Beacon!
