Frequently Asked Questions about LEADERSHIP FOR CHANgE

What are the benefits of this program?
The leadership skills and the techniques shared through all of our workshops will help develop you to become a resourceful, effective student leader. In addition, the benefits of the program extend beyond the practical skill building including strengthening your resume, providing networking opportunities, and learning about other campus leaders’ experiences.

What do I get when I complete a track?
You will receive a certificate of completion once you complete 5 out of the 6 workshops offered in one track. Once you complete the program we encourage you to begin another track the following semester.

Can I do more than one track at a time?
Each track is uniquely designed to fit the needs for students in various levels of experience of leadership, but you may participate in multiple tracks if you feel that the workshops offered fit your needs. For new students who will be taking a leadership role in the future, we encourage you to begin with the Emerging Leaders track and continue on the following semester with the Student Organization track.

When are the workshops offered?
The Emerging Leader track workshops are offered every Monday starting February 16th, the Student Organization workshops are offered every Tuesday starting February 17th, and the Social Consciousness workshops are offered every Wednesday starting February 18th.

Can I attend just one workshop?
Yes you may attend one, a few or all of them. Although the workshops will have some continuity within each of the tracks, you will still find each session beneficial on their own.

Can I attend workshops in different tracks?
You certainly can! Each workshop is assigned to a track but can be viewed as stand alone sessions.

How do I complete a track?
In order to complete a track you, you must attend 5 out of the 6 workshops for the track. Each track is offered the same time and day of the week for 6 weeks to make it easier for members to attend and keep track of the schedule.

Is there a timeline to completing a track?
If you are unable to complete a track one semester, keep an eye out for next semester’s schedule and note which workshop you need to attend to complete the track. If you have specific questions about a workshop for the following semester, feel free to ask the LFC liaison at any of the workshops.

What is the Social Change Model?
Our goals are based on the seven values of the Social Change Model of Leadership, which was created in 1996 by “the working ensemble” of professionals gathered by the Higher Education Research Institute. These values include consciousness of self and others, congruency, commitment, collaboration, common purpose, controversy with civility, and citizenship. Read more about the Social Change Model »

I’m not in a Student Organization- can/should I do this?
We believe that leadership can be demonstrated beyond having a position within a student organization. Leadership is not a position but a process, which is why we offer the three different tracks to appeal to all students at various levels of development. While the Student Organization track workshops touch on a few Vassar specific leadership details, the majority of the information will be general enough and applicable for any future organization you may participate in.

How often will these workshops be offered?
The Leadership for Change program begins with every new semester and the schedule typically goes for six to seven weeks. Many of the workshops are repeated every semester and you can check the schedule that will be published at the beginning of each semester.

What if I miss a workshop or can’t make one?
If you are unable to make a workshop and would like to complete the track this semester, you may submit a workshop substitution form (download) and follow the instructions provided. Substitutions approved in the past include lectures or other campus events that discuss topics related to the missed workshop.

Can I attend a workshop even if I’m not registered?
We encourage you to register in order to keep you updated of upcoming workshops by email but you are not required to register to attend a workshop.

What is the purpose of the passport?
The passport keeps track of the workshops you attended. We do have sign up sheets at every session so in case you lose your passport we will have records of which workshops you attended.

How do I register?
An online registration form is available here.
