PHOCUS is a non-discriminatory organization and membership is open to all members of the Vassar community: those with knowledge of darkroom and camera processes, and also those without who are looking to gain photography skills.
Members of PHOCUS have access to the community dark room for an annual fee of $25 and also a digital printer for a fee of $20 per semester. If members are looking to gain knowledge and enhance their photography skills information sessions and workshops are held periodically throughout the year which in the past have included Photoshop, DSLR basics, Portrait photography and many more. This year we are also happy to offer a mini-course in black and white developing and dark room basics.
In the Fall semester, PHOCUS puts together a fundraiser highlighting student photography which has previously included canvas bags, greeting cards, and calendars to be sold for reasonable prices to the Vassar community. In the Spring semester PHOCUS’s major project is the organization and publication of our annual black and white magazine, FIX. In order to involve the entire Vassar community, submissions for this publication are opened to the entire campus, not simply PHOCUS members. Depending on availability, PHOCUS also works towards holding student photography exhibitions in both the Fall and Spring semesters.
