FACE AIDS
ProHealth is Vassar College’s Chapter of FACE AIDS, a youth movement to fight HIV/AIDS. FACE AIDS aims to promote global health equity and social justice by increasing awareness and raising money for Partners In Health Rwanda.
The current disparity in HIV prevalence, access to treatment and care, and general health outcomes between the world’s rich and the world’s poor is unjust and unacceptable. Combating these pressing global health challenges requires strong leadership and innovative ideas. FACE AIDS empowers HIV-affected youth in impoverished communities with access to credit, savings, and business skills training, helping to limit HIV/AIDS’ devastating impact on the social and economic development of communities.
In addition to these programs in Rwanda, ProHealth energizes awareness about HIV/AIDS on Vassar’s campus. We create Back To School Care Packages for students to send to their friends and through the proceeds, we support one student in Partners In Health’s School Fees Program in Rwanda to go to school for a year. We work with the Vassar College Office of Health Education and Student Health Services to put on campus-wide testing campaigns to decrease stigma of HIV/AIDS in our community.
“I am very impressed and moved by FACE AIDS. What a wonderful and creative commitment by students to confront the challenges of global poverty and disease. Most importantly, FACE AIDS has it just right: these problems are solvable, and this is the generation to solve them. Bravo to all of you.” – Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General
