ViCE Jazz hosts jazz night every week where you can join your fellow music loving students down in the mug for live music, dancing, and drinks. Every week we have a different band and a different kind of music.

The Vassar Student Bands Union is an organization dedicated to the promotion and collaboration of Vassar College based student “bands.” The term ‘bands’ or ‘band’ refers to musical groups with at least one member that are not officially supported by any department of Vassar College.

The V.S.B.U will host events where student bands both Vassar based and based at other colleges and universities can perform. Additionally, the V.S.B.U. will act as a support system and resource for the many Vassar College students who play in bands. The V.S.B.U represents a serious attempt to improve both the musical quality of Vassar based student bands and the experiences of the Vassar student/musicians who participate in them.

LOVE IN STOCKHOLM

Rock ‘n soul band Love in Stockholm emerged in 2007 from the basement parties of Allston, a low-rent neighborhood of Boston packed with college kids and musicians. They soon gained a reputation for their wild live performances, complete with blasting horns and frontman Charlie Rockwell’s guttural wail. Their newest release, A King’s Ransom (fall 2010), is the band’s first full-length record, and pays homage to classic rock greats like Joe Cocker, The Band, and Sly and the Family Stone. They began recording in early 2010, under the guide of two recent Berklee College of Music grads, and embarked on a grueling recording schedule that would have them in the studio at all hours, sometimes recording as many as 100 tracks on one song. The entirely fan-funded record marks a turning point for the group, who now come back to Boston after a 20 date, multi-city tour all over the Northeast to release the record in front of their hometown crowd. The album is already getting rave reviews by local blogs, like Boston Band Crush who calls Rockwell “an armed and fully-functioning singing battlestation” and notes the “wild talent” and “shared soul” of the band. The album will hit stores in mid October. Expect big things from this rock hard six piece.

Upon entering Vassar College in the fall of 2008, keyboardist and band-leader Luke Leavitt focused his energy on the formation of an Afrobeat band. He assembled a 9-piece group of horn players, guitarists, and percussionists from a variety of jazz, funk and Afro-Latin backgrounds, which came to be known as the Body Electric Afrofunk Band.

The Body Electric follows in the tradition of Nigerian legend, Fela Kuti, layering African rhythms with funk elements—inspired by The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, among others. Over the Afrofunk grooves, band members often take extended improvisational solos—providing a strong connection to jazz and blues idioms.

The group self-produced a demo in the winter of 2009, showcasing their unique blend of genres, but the only way to fully experience the Body Electric is to see them live. The dance-able rhythms bring the audience to their feet while the soloists often lead the band from a subdued groove to an impassioned frenzy.

The Body Electric has created a sound that is multivalent and diverse, but cohesive and recognizable. Both on record and live, the Body Electric Afrofunk Band creates an experience that stimulates the mind, stirs the heart, and sets the body in motion.
