Our group originated in 1942 as an All-Women’s acapella group at an all-women’s school. This historical identity is empowering to us and aids us in building community. At the same time it is important to us to be inclusive to those beyond the gender binary and to ensure that this empowering space does not become one of exclusion. A few years ago the Night Owls, encouraged by trans members of the group, went from using the term All-Female to the label All-Women’s Gender Inclusive group. We continue to be intentional about using this language as we wish to ensure that we are as inclusive as possible to all folx regardless of assignment at birth. We recognize the complexity and nuance of this label and are a group constantly in flux; we evolve with our membership and are always learning from one another.
